    Deeds

    Deed copies can be obtained by visiting the Butler County Recorder of Deeds Office in the Butler County Government Center, 124 W. Diamond St., Butler.
    Deed copies also can be obtained by visiting the office’s Web site at www.co.butler.pa.us, or by submitting a written request. Other public land records also are available through the recorder of deeds.

    Hunting License

    Hunting licenses are sold at many stores and the Butler County Treasurer’s office in the Butler County Government Center at 124 W. Diamond St., Butler. 
    General adult hunting licenses cost $20.70. General junior licenses cost $6.70. General senior licenses cost $13.70. Seniors also have the option of a lifetime license for $51.70

    Birth/death certificates

    Certifications of birth and death records can be obtained for Butler County residents between 1893 and 1905 from the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court Offices, Level L, Butler County Government Center, 124 W. Diamond St., Butler. To obtain a certification of a birth or death record from the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court, you must know the person’s first and last name and date of birth or death. Place of birth or death and parents’ names are helpful but not required.
    If the office must research the records, there is a $5 per name research and retrieval fee in addition to the $5 certification fee. Fees can be paid to the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court in cash if in person, or with a certified check or money order if mailed.     Birth and death certificates for 1906 until now are in the state office building, 101 S. Mercer St., New Castle, Division of Vital Records. To obtain a death or birth certificate through the office of vital records, you must know the person’s name, date and place of death or birth. You must also state your relationship to the deceased and reason for your request. 
    PA Vital Records has an $10 service fee in addition to the $10 fee for a birth certificate and $9 for a death certificate. The division of vital records can be reached at 724-656-3100. The division’s website is www.health.state.pa.us.

    Passports

    You can apply for a passport and a passport card at the Butler County Prothonotary’s office in the Butler County Courthouse. Access is through the Butler County Government Center, 124 W. Diamond St., Butler. You can also apply at some U.S. post offices by appointment only. Applications take four to 12 weeks to process.
    If you have never had a passport, you will need two passport photographs, which can be taken at the post office, and a copy of a state-certified birth certificate with a raised seal and photograph identification, such as a driver’s license. 
    Children’s birth certificates must list the parents’ names. 
    You also must supply your Social Security number.
    People 16 and older must pay a total of $135 ($110 to the U.S. State Department and $25 to the prothonotary’s office) for a passport and $55 for a passport card. 
    A check for $110 must be made out to the U.S. State Department and a separate check for $25 must be made out to the prothonotary’s office. The passport is good for 10 years.
    People 15 and younger must pay a total of $105 for a passport and $40 for a passport card. It is valid for five years.
    Applicants must apply in person. Both parents or legal guardians must apply for a passport for someone younger than 14.
    Expedited service costs $60 and guarantees the passport will arrive in two to three weeks.
    Expired passports can be renewed for $110 if the applicants were older than 16 when the passport was acquired.

    Dog License

    Dog licenses can be obtained at the Butler County Treasurer’s office in the Butler County Government Center, 124 W. Diamond St., Butler.
    The cost is $8.45, or $6.45 if the dog is spayed or neutered.
    Senior citizens pay $6.45, or $4.45 if the dog is spayed or neutered.

    Fishing License

    Fishing licenses are sold at many stores and at the Butler County Treasurer’s office in the Butler County Government Center, 124 W. Diamond St., Butler, and online at www.fish.state.pa.us . 
    Fishing licenses cost $21.70 for residents, plus another $9.70 for a trout stamp. 
    Seniors can buy a lifetime fishing license for $51.70 and a trout stamp for $9.70. A senior annual license is $10.70.
    Anyone who wants to fish in Lake Erie or it’s tributaries must purchase a Lake Erie stamp for $9.70. A combination Lake Erie and trout stamp is available for $15.70.
    Children under 16 do not need a license.

    Boat License

    Driver’s License

    Call the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Driver’s License Center in Pointe Plaza, New Castle Road, Butler at 724-284-1424. Driver’s manuals and other information are available there.
    Learner’s permits cost $34.50 and testing is done by appointment only. Driver’s license renewal fees vary depending on type of license and license status.

    Marriage License

    Marriage licenses can be obtained at the Butler County Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans’ Court Offices, Level L, in the Butler County Government Center, 124 W. Diamond St., Butler. 
    For license application information, call the hotline at 724-284-5379 or visit www.co.butler.pa.us and click on marriage under quick tips. Marriage license fees are $60.
    To obtain a certification of a license, you must know both marrying persons’ names at the time of application and an approximate time frame when the license was issued. 
    If the office must research the license, there is a $5 fee. There is a $5 fee for certification of the marriage license or application. Fees can be paid in cash if in person, or with a certified check or money order if mailed. The register of wills office can be reached at 724-284-5349. Applicants may only apply from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

    Wills

    Not all wills have been entered into public record and are only registered after death. Those who have been registered can be found in the Register of Wills’ Office Level L, Butler County Government Center, 124 W. Diamond St., Butler.
    If the office must research and copy the will, there is a $5 fee plus $1 per page. Self-made copies cost 25 cents a page. Fees can be paid in cash if in person or with a certified check or money order if the request is mailed. The Register of Wills office can be reached at 724-284-1409.
